Dr. Wayne Lord, Organist/Choirmaster

Wayne Lord grew up in North Augusta and began piano lessons at the age of seven. Upon graduation from North Augusta High School, he enrolled at Augusta College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in piano performance in the studio of Vola Jacobs.  He also studied organ with Preston Rockholt and John Schaeffer.  His professional career has been in education and in church music.

In Aiken County he taught junior high school general and choral music (1972-1986), moved to the district office as a staff development trainer and curriculum coordinator (1986-92), and concluded his South Carolina work as a consultant in the areas of music education and gifted education for the Department of Education (1992-2006).  Dr. Lord is recognized nationally for his state policy work in gifted education.

In 2006 he joined the faculty of the College of Education at Augusta University to teach Educational Leadership.  While at AU, he moved from faculty to Department Chair and retired as Associate Dean for Graduate Studies in 2019.

As a church musician, he began playing the organ in church at the age of 15 and has served as organist for several churches in the CSRA.  His longest tenure was as Organist/Choirmaster at Grace United Methodist Church for 36 years.  Wayne considers his calling as a church musician to be central to his Christian identity.  He believes that music helps us remember and reflect upon God and is a connecting thread among the elements of worship.

Wayne has served on the Harry Jacobs Chamber Music Society Board, worked as a rehearsal accompanist for several productions of the Augusta Players, and currently is on the Board of the Augusta Symphony and serves on the Executive Committee as Vice President for Artistic Advisory.  He enjoys food, friends, and traveling.
